In the Family Constellations project, the artist draws on his collection of old albumen photographs, the “carte de visite,” to bring to light faces and presences otherwise destined for oblivion.
The common thread is the The intense blue of cyanotype, a 19th-century photographic technique that combines rigor and poetry: as in engraving, there is the pleasure of manual gesture—the preparation of iron salts, the application of the image onto cotton paper, the slow, ritualistic process. And, as in painting, the brushstrokes and contrasting light create a powerfully expressive language in monochrome.
Each print, even if included in a single edition, remains unique: no two cyanotypes are identical.
