In the Blue Rooms, the artist sought to breathe new life into household objects, posing them and giving them a new identity. In some compositions, echoes of traditional still life painting resurface from visual memory.
The underlying theme is the intense blue of cyanotype, a 19th-century photographic technique that combines rigor and poetry. As in engraving, there is the pleasure of manual labor—the preparation of iron salts, the application of the paint onto cotton paper, the slow, ritualistic process. And, as in painting, the brushstrokes and contrasting light create a powerfully expressive language in monochrome.
Each print, even if included in a single edition, remains unique: no two cyanotypes are identical. Thanks to this unmistakable blue, the images seem to come from a distant past, lending the objects an aura of timelessness. They remain unchanged over the centuries, just as the gestures with which we use them today remain unchanged.
